Kaori Goyen-Chiba was born in Tokyo, Japan (1959) and studied classic drawing and graphic design.
In 1980 Kaori moved to San Francisco (USA) to study English and fashion design. She worked in the fashion industry for several years, in some exclusive boutiques. She has worked for people like Shirley MacLaine and The Pointer Sisters.
After several years Kaori decided to go to university again. She studied Material Science & Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and graduated in 1994. In Silicon Valley (California) she worked in the IT industry for several years.
After her marriage with her Dutch husband, Kaori moved to The Netherlands, where she started with ceramic art in 2003. For Kaori working with thin clay slabs is like working with pieces of cloth in her fashion time. Working with glazes and heat treatments is like material engineering. Thus, all her life’s experiences found their places in her ceramic art.
This website gives you an introduction to Kaori's ceramic work. In 2011 she has finished a series of 21 Zen monks, which were exhibited in the beautiful Galerie Absoluut in Amersfoort (see the photo above). Some of these works are still for sale; check the chapter "21 Zen monks".
Kaori is now working on a series of 21 women. If you are interested, please check the News page of this site every now and then.
Kaori is quite versatile. Nowadays she also plays as an actress in several TV commercials and TV series. Mostly on Dutch TV: Ziggo, YoungCapital, Popoz and Meisjes van de Herengracht. She also played a role in a TV series in Belgium: 'Wij van België', about the Belgian prince and princess.
